Education is an integral part of the work of the Solent Centre for Architecture + Design. The Centre supports and promotes education in all aspects of its work as a way of generating greater understanding of the importance of the environment and the way in which the people can play a role in managing it.
The Education Partner Programme has gone from strength to strength this year, with a reputation that has grown nationally and internationally. Our approach to a teacher focusd training programme that provides the skills and resources necessary for teachers and student teachers to confidently take built environment education into the classroom has proved very effective, sustainable and has gretaer impact than if we focused only on students. In the past year we have introduced new courses on Sustainability and Landscape and are currently delivering and developing courses and workshops on Building Schools for the Future and Public Art and Placemaking. The Education partner Programme has also been delivered in collaboration with other Architecture Centres in the UK.
This year has seen the launch of 3 SPUD Youth groups across the region, and the development of a new programme called Take One Building. Take One Building will enable young people to interogate buildings through an interactive website and encourage schools to take site vivits to these buildings. Grounds for Optimism schools landscape award completed a successful pilot programme last year and we are now developing a full programme for roll out in September 2010 for primary and secondary schools.
