Education

You are here: Education

Education is an integral part of the work of the Solent Centre for Architecture + Design.  The Centre supports and promotes education in all aspects of its work as a way of generating greater understanding of the importance of the environment and the way in which the people can play a role in managing it.

We tailor our education projects and initiatives to have immediate relevance to both formal and informal learners.  This is especially true for schools where there is a new emphasis on extending creativity and creative teaching across all subject areas, as well as a renewed concern with citizenship.  "Citizenship is more than a statutory subject.  If taught well and tailored to local needs, its skills and values will enhance democratic life for us all, beginning in school and radiating out".  The Solent Centre runs a variety of projects with many different educational partners.  For more information about past and present projects, click on the links below:

Current Projects

Education Partner Programme

The Education Partner Programme has been established to create a teacher facilitated approach to exploring ways that the designed built environment can be used for enhancing the delivery of the school curriculum and developing professional practice.  It also provides opportunities for teachers to come together and share good practice and work collaboratively.   Other Teacher Training programmes:

CPD Training for Teachers in the form of free workshops exploring how to use the built environment and the natural landscape as learning vehicles to enhance the delivery of the school curriculum.

Phase 2 Portsmouth working with St Edmunds Catholic School and Portsmouth College giving teachers the necessary training and skills to take the built environment into the classroom.

SPUD (Space, Placemaking and Urban Design)

SPUD is the name of a new network of architectural youth groups across southern Hampshire. The first group is up and running in Eastleigh and 2 more groups will be launched in Portsmouth and Southamptonin the New Year.  Each group consists of 12 young people aged 14-19 years old who are passionate about the built environment and interested in helping influence the future of their towns and cities. Each group has a specific design project and will work with an architectural practice, Planning Aid and their local authority to develop concept designs for their chosen areas.
