Year 7 Built Environment Activity Week
Sholing Technology College students took part in a week long mapping, data collection and analysis activity for their school site and surrounding community during the first week of October. This provided them with a huge range of information to help develop their Partner Programme activities across the school.
A key element in mapping the local community will be an interactive map, which will be populated with information and photographs by Sholing students. To view the online map as it develops please click the link below:
How Places Work - School Visits Programme
(A CABE funded programme)
Sholing Technology College took 50 Year 8 students to see Bedales School near Peteresfield. They spent time looking around the new Orchard Building designed by Walters Cohen Architects. Students were also shown around other parts of the campus, in particular the 'Arts and Crafts' style library, to illustrate where some of the design cues for new building were taken from. The tour was kindly led by architect Giovanni Bonfanti (Walters Cohen).
The following is a selection of some of the students drawings completed during their tour. The winning drawing was done by Danielle Manvell in Year 8. Danielle received a selection of art materials as her prize. CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO SEE A FULL SIZE VERSION
Sketchup Workshop
The Sketchup workshop was setup as an introduction to the sketchup software, with live demonstrations led by Nicola Crowson from Architecture PLB. Sketchup can be used as a 3D digital design tool, where you can import a 2D plan and from this create a 3D digital model. Once you have created your 3D model you can render photorealistic looks to make it look like a real structure. Sketchup can be downloaded for free at : Sketchup
Built Environment Project - 01/10/07
The year 7's have started a week long Built Environment Project, with the aim to re-design two learning spaces in the school grounds. They will have to consider safety, lighting, windows, doors, tables and any other equipment that might be within the spaces. The students will be using mapping and sketchup sessions to get them started.
At the end of the week the students will be presenting their final designs along with all the research work they have been producing throughout the week to a selected panel.
For the first session the class were split into two groups, with one group starting with sketchup, and the other with signage.
The sketchup session started out with an introduction to the software with a few examples. Then the class started to design a simple room layout to get to know the different sketchup tools.
The other group started to work on sign designs; they first had to think about the connection between the design and a theme for the sign. Some of the students picked technology and had a futuristic look to the text.
Day two of the built environment project was mainly focused on the model designs. All the class worked very well in small groups demonstrating great team work.
One group said:
"Scale drawings are easy, but making the model is quite difficult" (Bethany, Alice, Abbi, Sophie)
2nd Group
Same as the 1st group the students managed to produce some amazing detailed models demonstrating good use of scale.
Some of the models had a whole classroom layout of seating, tables and storage cabinets.
