Ringwood students have been involved in a range of Built Environment (BE) projects in and out of the classroom during the past year. There is now both an actual and a virtual model of the school site. The 1:200 scale model was constructed over several months by more than thirty students (Years 6-13) in a BE Club. Governor Steve Stephens, a structural engineer who has worked on the school's building projects for more than a decade, created a basic 'kit' for a cardboard model on a wooden base, populated with tiny figures from a modelling shop!
The virtual model is being developed by Year 7, whose interrelated schemes of work in ICT, geography and citizenship all have a BE focus this year. Both models have already been used in curriculum areas including biology and art, while the virtual model is being extended to cover the whole town for use in the Town Council's 'Market Town Health Check'.
Project Report - Ringwood
The aim of Partner Programme is a way to enhance young people's awareness of their built environment, by developing resources and approaches that can be used within the curriculum. As part of the partner programme Damian Heywood has put together a package of objectives for Ringwood School outlining the 3 year programme and what has been achieved in the past 2 years. Year 7 Student Project
Year 7 have been working on a "Built Environment Project", where they have been set briefs to find out more about the history of Ringwood and its buildings. One year 7 pupil has conducted a project where they have been looking at the history of all the buildings and places of Ringwood, including Ringwood School and the road safety signs. Chinese Teachers visit to Ringwood
Qingdao students write to Ringwood students
As part of developing and strengthening the international link between Qingdao School Number 58 and Sholing and Ringwood Schools we had 2 teachers from Qingdao visit at the start of October. They were also here to represent their school as part of the Connecting Cultures film project with Creative Partnerships
The two teachers spent time at both schools, observing lessons and talking with staff and students. They were also shown around Southampton and the New Forest and even had a chance to meet with the Mayor of Southampton for tea. The week reinforced the desire to develop an exchange between the 3 schools and the hope that teachers from the UK may be able to make a return trip there next year. The schools will look to formalising a sister school relationship of mutual sharing and co-operation.Year 9 Ringwood students showing off letters from students at No 58 School in Qingdao, China. Ringwood students have already sent letters back to Qingdao and these are the responses. It's hoped that this relationship will build between the 2 schools and further exchanges of letters, projects and even students may happen in the future.
Bridge Building Project
Architect Paul Bulkeley from Snug Projects worked with over 60 year 7 students for an afternoon to help them design and construct their own bridges from cardboard, string and selotape.
After a feverish afternoon of frantic building the bridges were put to the test. They each received scores for their design, imagination, construction techniques and finally the amount of weight they could take.
Ringwood Town Trail
Year 7 pupils have started a project based around the history of the buildings in Ringwood. They will go out in groups and have set areas to work in. The groups will have mixed roles such as photography, video recording, and interviewing; this is so they can collect as much information as possible of the buildings in that one particular area. From this information collected they will start developing the interactive map by inputting all the video recordings, photographs, and text in to the exact locations on to map.
