History Module

As part of Bitterne Manors year 6's history module they have been working with architect Andy Siddall, the aim is to end up with an exhibition model of Quay Side Road.  One of the tasks will be to design a building of there own and to choose a location with the model of the street to place it.

The first stage of this exercise was when a theatre group came into the school to run history activities, which included role plays, costume designs, room designs, trying on costumes and ending the day with presentations.

The theatre group split the class into groups and did a variety of history related tasks, which included role plays, design work, and presentations.  Some of Bitterne Park's drama students came over for the day to help out and give advice to the other students.

Survey Work

The aim of the survey work was to collect as much data as possible about Quay Side Road, Andy Siddall (architect) helped the class in working out the ages of the buildings, as well as the heights.  They also photographed the whole street in preparation for the street model they will be making.  Andy had plans of the area and got the class to colour in the different uses of the street using a colour key.

Four year 7 pupils from Ringwood School helped out for an afternoon working with sketchup.  They started off with presentations showing some examples of work they have already created.  Then they worked with the rest of the group showing different techniques and helping out with any problems they had using sketchup.  Sketchup can be downloaded for free at: Sketchup

Reviewing Ideas

This was an opportunity to present the groups ideas in front of the class including Andy Siddall.  The groups came up with a variety of ideas for their building designs, ranging from domes to ships.  The day ended with feedback from Andy and the Solent team, advising the groups in some of the design ideas and what to do next.
