Delivering a built environment education programme of quality to all schools within Hampshire would be an impossible task and it is for this reason that we established a ‘partner programme’. It aimed to deliver focused, high quality educational programmes and activities to the schools involved and for them to go on to be advocates of built environment educational initiatives to other schools across Hampshire.
We established 6 secondary partner schools to work collaboratively with the Solent Centre for Architecture + Design. The programme ran for 3 years, including an initial 4 - 6 month consultation and development period.
Throughout the programme we developed teaching packages and initiatives designed to raise the understanding of the built environment amongst the children. These were developed in such a way as to be easily accessible by all teachers in the future. We ensured that the programme measured the baseline knowledge of pupils at the beginning of the programme and are then monitoring the knowledge base of each cohort as they progress through school.
The programme was developed in close collaboration with the schools along with their partnered architectural practice and encouraged the partner schools to seek opportunities of working together and sharing ideas and experiences. The three architectural practices who worked throughout the 3 years of the programme were Snug Projects, architecture PLB and Civic.

Investigating Places Resource Pack
This resource pack has been put together to accompany the Partner Programme, but also to support other teachers and educationalists in delivering built environment education. This resource provides a flexible framework for investigating any place, anywhere. It provides an introduction to the design process and a framework for investigating a local place to identify what works, what doesn’t work and what might be improved. There are eight areas of activity which can be used independently or as a series of investigations. It is fully available to download and use and is updated regularly. You will find it loacted within our Resource Library, where you will find many other other images and documents available for download. Roche Court Teacher Event
20th September 2006
Final Celebration Event
The celebration event was held at Bitterne Park School in Southampton. Most of the schools which had taken part in the programme attended, including a number of professionals who had helped during the project. Each school gave a 20 minute presentation showing what they had been working on and what they had achieved. The afternoon ended up with a tour of the schools grounds.
An excellent afternoon of thought provoking and articulate workshops was led by Paul Bulkeley (Snug Projects) and Lucy Salisbury (Roche Court) for teachers from all the Partner Schools. Below you will find the workshops to download, along with notes from the event.Activity 1: Describing Place
Activity 2: Making and Placing
Activity 3: Pieces of Place
