with the Trafalgar School at DowntonThe Trafalgar school at Downton were keen to take part in the How Places Work scheme and to use the visit to get the students to think about new designs for a misused space in their school grounds. SCA+D thought that this was a great opportunity to bring the help of an artist onboard to support extension work through the Creative Outcomes scheme.
The project consisted of a series of design workshops including; site exploration, inspiration board compiling, idea gathering and then a final presentation workshop. The trip to Hilliers played an integral part in providing inspirational examples to the teams and on-hand expert guidance from Chris Carter, Trudi, Rosie and the Hilliers team.
The project focussed on working with 30 students in five teams of six. Each team worked on a different aspect of the design and developed it over the various design workshops.
The 5 aspects of the space were:
Function – how do they want the space to be used?
Form – what do they want it to look like/represent?
Materials – what materials do they want to make it from?
Hard Landscaping – what constructive elements do they want?
Soft Landscaping – what sorts of planting do they want?
The teams were asked to produce a presentation board of every stage of development of their ideas and then prepare a 5 minute presentation to their peers and a panel of judges including the school bursar, the chairmen of governors and representatives from the school council.
The work produced was really great and shows all the effort and determination of the teams. All the work is now on show in the school dining area where the rest of the school can offer suggestions as to how they would like to see the space developed. Click here to see the work for yourself!
The school hopes to raise the funds to put some of the designs in place in the near future. SCA+D will keep in touch to record the progress!
